Why does pet urine smell come back after cleaning?
Because most of the urine isn’t in the carpet you can see. It runs through the fibers and backing and spreads out in the pad below, and with an older accident or a repeat spot, it can reach the subfloor. A surface clean or a spray freshens the top for a day or two, and then the smell comes back from underneath.
If the odor never really left, or keeps returning in the same spots, the source is still down there.
Why do urine spots look small but smell so strong?
Liquid spreads sideways once it reaches the pad. The carpet fibers may only show a small mark, while the pad and backing underneath hold a much bigger area. That’s why we don’t clean just the spot you can see. We find the edges of the whole affected area and treat out past them.
Why does pet urine smell worse on humid days?
Dried urine leaves salts in the carpet and pad. Those salts pull moisture out of the air, and when they get damp, the odor comes right back. Knoxville summers are humid, so a spot that seemed fine in January can announce itself in July. The same thing happens when you shampoo a spot with water: you wake the smell up without removing what causes it.
How do you get pet urine out of carpet in Knoxville?
Steam is our pick for urine, every time. Truck-mounted hot water extraction flushes the treated area and pulls the contamination back out of the carpet with strong suction, which a low-moisture method can’t do. If you want to know why, our steam vs low-moisture guide explains the difference.
We use green, eco-friendly solutions that are safe for pets and kids once the carpet is dry, so your dog or cat can come back to the room without breathing in harsh fumes.
Will old pet urine stains come out?
Sometimes not completely, and we’d rather tell you that before we start than after. Urine that has sat for a long time can permanently change the color of the carpet fibers. The odor may be gone, but a light or yellowed patch can stay.
Odor can also stay in the worst cases, when urine has soaked the pad over and over. When that happens, cleaning alone can’t fix it, and in the worst cases the pad needs replacing. We’ll be straight with you about where your carpet stands.
Should you use peroxide or oxy cleaners on pet urine?
Not on old urine. Peroxide and “oxy” sprays can bleach or discolor carpet, and old urine has often already changed the fiber’s color. Put the two together and a faint stain can become a light spot that won’t go away. If you’ve already tried them, that’s fine; just tell us so we know what we’re working with.
What should you do right after a pet accident?
- Blot up as much as you can with plain white towels. Press, don’t rub.
- Stand on the towel to pull more up from below, and switch to a dry one until it stops coming up wet.
- Skip the heavy sprays and the hair dryer. Heat and harsh chemicals can set the stain.
- If it keeps happening in the same spot, call or text us before it reaches the pad and subfloor.
Can you remove pet urine from rugs and furniture too?
Yes. Pets don’t always pick the carpet. Area rugs can be cleaned on site, or picked up, cleaned and brought back, and we check the fiber and dyes first. See area rug cleaning. For couches and chairs, we check the fabric and care tag before we pick a method. See upholstery cleaning.
